More than half of Indonesian people cannot get good nutrition

According to an analysis conducted by Kompas based on this data, there are 68 percent or 183.7 million Indonesians who are unable to meet this adequacy.

Using the 2014 Indonesian Nutrition Adequacy Rate (RDA) standard, the number of Indonesians who cannot afford healthy food has dropped from 68 percent to 57 percent. This figure is equivalent to 155 million people in Indonesia.

Food prices in Indonesia are among the highest

According to the FAO report, food prices in Indonesia are among the highest compared to other Southeast Asian countries based on people’s purchasing power.

The price of nutritious food in Indonesia reaches up to US$4.47 which is equivalent to around Rp.69,000. In comparison, Thailand has PPP US$4.3, Philippines US$4.1, Vietnam US$4 and Malaysia US$3.5.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a factor

As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an extraordinary impact from various aspects. Not only has it claimed many lives, the pandemic has also caused financial difficulties in various community groups.

In 2017, the number of people who cannot afford nutritious food reached 70.7 percent. There was an improvement in 2018 with a percentage of 68.9 percent, and 2019 with 67.3 percent. However, this figure increased again to 69.1 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Half of Indonesian people have not been able to fulfill sufficient nutritious menus. The COVID-19 pandemic was also a factor that resulted in this large number.
