Bumisuka.com – Overcome Obesity with Bariatric Surgery and Here are the Benefits. According to UNICEF, obesity cases among adults in Indonesia have continued to increase over the last two decades. An unhealthy lifestyle and lack of physical activity are the reasons for a significant increase in obesity cases.
There are many ways that can be done to treat obesity, one of which is bariatric surgery. Pondok Indah Group Hospital just held a Press Conference Against Obesity with Bariatric Surgery.
This event presents Dr. dr. Peter Ian Limas, Sp.B.SubBDig, Surgeon Specialist in Digestive Surgery at Pondok Indah Hospital – Pondok Indah, to explain the benefits and types of bariatric surgery.
1. What is bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure performed to help people who are obese. Doctor Peter explained that this procedure is done by modifying the digestive tract.
This method aims to control the amount of food that can be accommodated by the stomach and reduce the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. This is expected to provide a better diet for obese patients in the future.
2. Types of bariatric surgery
Doctor Peter explained that bariatric surgery can be divided into three main types, namely sleeve gastrectomy, Roux en Y gastric bypass, and single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S). These three methods are aimed at different obesity cases.
- Sleeve gastrectomy: This method is generally used for less severe cases of obesity.
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: This method is used for more severe cases of obesity and for patients with metabolic problems, such as diabetes or hypertension.
- Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S): This procedure is used for very severe cases of obesity.
These three measures have the ultimate result of weight loss due to modification of the patient’s digestive tract.
3. Bariatric surgery is different from cosmetic surgery
Doctor Peter emphasized that bariatric surgery is very different from cosmetic surgery, such as tummy tuck or liposuction. Bariatric surgery treats the root cause of obesity as well as its co-morbidities, while cosmetic surgery only improves appearance.
By modifying the patient’s digestive tract, food will not pass through the duodenum (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) or pass through the digestive tract more quickly (sleeve gastrectomy).
This process will cause an increase in the GLP-1 hormone which can improve sugar metabolism by insulin. Ultimately, this will help relieve the patient’s hunger, modify the hormone profile more effectively, and help reduce the calories absorbed by the body.
4. Preparation for bariatric surgery
Before performing a bariatric procedure, the initial steps include laboratory tests, cardiac examinations, and ultrasound with binoculars (endoscopy). This is done to see the condition of the esophagus and stomach, and identify the presence or absence of sleep apnea in the patient.
When the results of the examination are obtained, the patient will be required to consult several doctors, such as clinical nutrition specialists, internal medicine specialists, and others. This process will determine the patient’s eligibility for bariatric surgery and determine the type of surgery to be performed.
Patients are also advised to undergo a low-calorie diet about two weeks before bariatric surgery is performed.
5. Benefits of bariatric surgery
Apart from treating obesity, bariatric surgery has various other benefits. Doctor Peter explained that this procedure can prolong life and solve additional diseases associated with obesity.
Bariatric surgery also acts as a metabolic surgery. Some of the diseases that can be treated with bariatric surgery include heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and joint pain due to obesity.
Bariatric surgery is proven to be able to effectively treat obesity at various levels of severity. Not only that, this procedure can also treat other health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
